University of Doha for Science and Technology Pioneers Food Security and
Sustainability Solutions for Qatar and Beyond.
Food security and sustainability are core to the research agenda at the University of Doha for Science and Technology, focusing on solutions that contribute to Qatar’s National Food Security Strategy 2030 and support the evolution of agriculture globally. UDST is dedicated to advancing food security by ensuring access to safe, nutritious food and sustaining these goals through innovative agriculture, efficient resource use, and resilient food systems.
UDST recognizes that balancing environmental preservation with economic and social progress requires interdisciplinary research, advanced technologies, and actionable policies to address rising ecological and climate challenges. UDST has secured over USD 2.4 million in research grants to address critical food security and sustainability challenges in Qatar. These include optimizing agricultural practices for vegetable and date palm production, developing water-efficient greenhouse systems, conserving soil health, and protecting date farms. It also employs artificial intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) to improve livestock management for sustainable milk and meat production, and designs adaptive tools for monitoring and managing Qatar’s groundwater under climate change conditions.
In 2024, the University consolidated its efforts under the Center of Excellence - Food Security and Sustainability, a hub for advancing research and innovation. The Center is hosting the 2025 International Conference on Water and Food Security in the Face of Climate Change (WFCC 2025), building on the success of the 2023 International Conference on Innovation and Technological Advances for Sustainability. The 2023 event highlighted sustainability initiatives in Qatar and globally, covering climate-smart agriculture, post-harvest loss reduction, soil and crop productivity, greenhouse and hydroponic cultivation, agricultural water management, and sustainable farming practices.
WFCC 2025 underscores our commitment to food security and sustainability by uniting experts, policymakers, and innovators to tackle climate challenges. A key highlight includes the National Youth Symposium and Arab Youth Competition, empowering youth to share innovative ideas, foster leadership, and shape a more secure future. WFCC 2025 fosters collaboration aligned with global goals, including sustainable development goal (SDG) 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
UDST’s support for food security and sustainability reflects its research pillars—Sustainable Development, Digital Technology, Health, Wellbeing & Society, and STEM & TVET Education—and its mission to drive socio-economic impact, research excellence, and a sustainable future for Qatar and beyond.
